My main impulse regarding photography is an attempt to slow down its process to a less efficient pace and reflect on the way we memorise moments. Although my own pictures have little or no aesthetic value compared to the inextinguishable flow of human imagery (whether it's tasteful, crafty fine art photography or massive quantities of digital representations) the process they go through suggests – to me at least – a more tangible relationship to time than contemporary approaches. Images taken with hand-me-down cameras and leftover film take longer to process and seem out of place in a world where someone who takes a photo is required to share the result immediately on a little screen, and later on the Internet. The voyeuristic, secretive impulse is not fulfilled; neither is the need to register a specific moment in time. Perhaps the time and energy spent on keeping memories in a manual, active way – the way our parents did – denotes a yearning for a more rigourous approach to an activity that should not be taken lightly.
